The problem addressed by the present invention is to provide a lithium ion rechargeable battery in which increase in the internal resistance thereof is inhibited, and a method of manufacturing such a battery. A lithium ion rechargeable battery is provided with: an electrode body comprising a negative-electrode plate further comprising a negative-electrode metal foil and a negative-electrode active material layer containing negative-electrode active material particles therein, a positive electrode plate, and a separator; a battery case; and an electrolytic solution comprising at least a retained electrolytic solution. The negative electrode active material layer comprises an opposing section that is opposed to a positive-electrode active material layer, and a non-opposing section that is not opposed thereto, and the negative-electrode active material particles are particles that can be oriented in the magnetic field direction. When the angle between the direction in which the major axis of the cross section of each of the negative-electrode active material particles extends and the negative-electrode metal foil is assumed to be ?, the number of negative-electrode active material particles the angle ? of which is 60°-90° is assumed to be MA, the number of negative-electrode active material particles the angle ? of which is 0°-30° is assumed to be MB, and a value obtained as a result of dividing the number MA by the number MB is assumed to be the degree of orientation (AL) of the negative-electrode active material particles, the negative-electrode active material layer is made such that the degree of orientation (AL1) at the non-opposing section thereof is 1.2 or more. |
