The battery unit (10) has battery cells (12) positioned among multiple stack-like arranged cooling elements (11) i.e. heat conducting plates, for cooling the battery cells. The cooling elements are connected with each other by an elastic and compressible connecting element (14) i.e. channel, by the formation of receiving areas of the battery cells. The connecting element is made of an electrically insulating foam material. The cooling elements are designed as cooling plates for flowing cooling medium and made of a metallic material. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a battery unit.
