<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove an influence of an installation error of a density sensor by being divided into regular reflection components and irregular reflection components, and to detect density of an image with high accuracy. <P>SOLUTION: A density detector includes: a density sensor 71 which irradiates an elementary face of a belt with measurement light L0 to receive reflected light Lp of a regular reflection component and reflected light Ls of an irregular reflection component, and performs photoelectric conversion to the reflected light Lp, Ls, respectively to output a P-wave detection signal Sp and an S-wave detection signal Ss of two components; a ranging sensor 82 which measures separation distance between the elementary face of the belt and the installation surface of the density sensor 71 to output a ranging detection sensor S82; and an operation part 707 which calculates an installation error of the density sensor 71 to the elementary face of the belt on the basis of the ranging detection signal S82, and creates voltage detection characteristics of the regular reflection and irregular reflection components obtained by plotting density detection voltage to a density value of the elementary face of the belt.
