The method involves applying a coating to the first and second portions (6,7) of a substrate (3) by a thermal spray process, and processing the coating in the second portion by spraying a high pressure fluid jet. The coating in the second portion is removed after processing, for exposing the second portion of the substrate. A web (9) is attached to a suction pipe (11) for removing the excess coating material from the cylinder (1). The web is removed by machining, after the removal of coating from the second portion.
