The surface gripper comprises a suction plate (4) with multiple suction openings, and a carrier (5) carrying the suction plate. Multiple spring elements act between the suction plate and the carrier, which generate a restoring force during a relative movement of a section of the suction plate against the carrier, where the relative movement is effectuated by bending of the suction plate. The spring elements are coil springs. The suction plate comprises slits (8) for increasing its flexibility, which extend transversely to the longitudinal direction. The suction plate has a foam covering (7).
