The propulsion system has a motor that is mechanically with a clutch (4) and a gear box (6) over a crankshaft (10). The clutch is connected with an input shaft (14) and an output shaft (16). The output shaft is connected with a drive axle such that the idling speed of the crankshaft and a rotation speed of the output shaft are set to zero rpm in idling condition. A control element (44) of a control unit (8) is provided to reduce the temporary idling speed of the crankshaft around 30-70% according to actuation of the clutch. An independent claim is included for method for operating propulsion system.
