<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize an storage amount of waste ink within an waste ink tank as accurately as possible. <P>SOLUTION: A waste ink transport tube is provided to transport waste ink (ink leaking from a recording head during maintenance of the recording head) to a waste ink storage part (waste ink tank). A detection part is provided to generate output corresponding to a light transmission state in a direction intersecting with a transport direction of the waste ink in the waste ink transport tube.
