<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet processing apparatus capable of reading a number printed in a background color of a paper sheet even if a character area is disfeatured by separating the character area and a background area from each other. <P>SOLUTION: An image of the paper sheet which is carried is read by read means as R, G, and B digital images. The type of the paper sheet is determined based upon read image data read by the read means, and a number area printed on the paper sheet is set based upon the result. A degree of disfeaturement is measured based upon a density distribution histogram in the set number area, a number area whose degree of disfeaturement is within a set value range and low is set as a reference area. Cluster analysis for classifying a color distribution in the reference area into two which are the background area and character area is performed, and a color distribution with good separation between the background area and character area is set; and the character area is extracted based upon the color distribution, and an extracted character is collated with a standard pattern to recognize the character. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
