An adjustable anchor (20) for anchoring a lift cord (32) in a movable rail (28) of a covering (22) for an architectural opening includes a housing (36) which is releasably positionable interiorly of the movable rail (28) in alignment with a lift cord (32) for the covering (22) with the anchor (20) including a rotatable drum (38) within the housing (36) and around which the lift cord (32) can be wrapped or unwrapped by rotating movement of the drum (38) with a tool (34). Two distinct systems are provided for releasably securing the drum (38) in any selected position to retain the amount of lift cord (32) wrapped therearound with the two systems acting in mutually perpendicular planes for reliable anchoring of the lift cord (32).
