PURPOSE: A steady rest is provided to change positions of three rest arms without eliminating a contact effect of the arms from a workpiece so that centering of the workpiece is rapidly adjusted in a space. CONSTITUTION: A steady rest(1) comprises an actuator rod(5), first and second adjusting devices(31,32), and intermediate elements(16,17,20,30,35). The actuator rod has a passage opening(14). A force operating element(15) is inserted into the passage opening. The first adjusting device controls three rest arms together, at the same time, at a specific position when a workpiece is clamped so that the workpiece is aligned within a horizontal plane. The second adjusting device is form-locking-positively connected with the first adjusting device and/or the second adjusting device by intermediate elements in order to adjust the positions of the two outer rest arms so that the position of the workpiece is varied within a vertical plane while the workpiece is clamped.
