Method for limiting the maximum possible braking power of a hydrodynamic retarder

The method involves dissipating heat generated by hydrodynamic retarder (1) by coolant in engine cooling circuit (2) of vehicle drive motor (3). The retarder has driven primary blade (4) and secondary blade (5), which together form a toroidal portion which is optionally filled with a working medium and is emptied to transmit hydrodynamic torque from primary blade to secondary blade. The actual inlet pressure in inlet and/or inside of retarder is calculated from state variable of coolant, so that maximum braking power of retarder is reduced in function of current intake pressure.
