PURPOSE: A method for preparing 3,7-dimethyl-3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione is provided to reduce by-product generation and to obtain the compound of high purity. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing high purity 3,7-dimethyl-3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione of chemical formula 1 comprises: a step of suspending 3-methylxanthine of chemical formula 2 in water, low carbon number alcohol of C1-C4, or a mixture thereof; and a step of methylating the suspension using trimethylphosphate of chemical formula 3 as a methylating agent. The methylation is performed at 20-100 deg. C.
