A tidal gate damper 4 and a method of use thereof to slow or dampen the closure of a tidal gate 5, said gate 5 separates a seaward volume of water from a landward volume of water and moves between open and closed positions. Tidal gate 5 moves to the open position when the landward level of water is greater than the seaward level and moves to the closed position when the level of seaward water is greater than the landward level. The damper 4 is mounted to the tidal gate 5 so that upon closing, the tidal gate 5 applies a compressive force to the tidal gate damper 4, which may be made from a compressible material and may resiliently or elastically deform when a compressive force is applied, thus slowing the final closure of the tidal gate. |
