PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder deactivation internal combustion engine capable of eliminating an output stage difference in the case of changing the number of cylinders. SOLUTION: This cylinder deactivation internal combustion engine includes a plurality of cylinders respectively including four valves, and each cylinder includes a variable number of valve control mechanism capable of changing the number of operation valves, and the variable number of valve control mechanism can switch operation between the cylinder operation, which includes the two-valve operation operating two valves and the four-valve operation operating four valves, and the cylinder halt for halting all the valves. Switching from the two-valve operation to the four-valve operation is performed all at once at a point in time when the engine speed Ne becomes equal to or higher than a threshold valueα, and in the case wherein the engine speed Ne is lower than the threshold valueα, the number of halted cylinders being halted is gradually reduced in response to an increase of grip openingθg.
