PURPOSE: A device and method for removing surface defects from a slab are provided to improve the efficiency of a scarfing work by not requiring hand scarfing and grinding works. CONSTITUTION: A device for removing surface defects from a slab comprises a noncontact measuring unit(10), a scarfing unit(20), and a controller(30). The noncontact measuring unit is moved in the width direction of a slab(1) to scan the surface shape of the slab. The scarfing unit is composed of multiple oxygen slots(21) for scarfing the top, bottom, left, and right portions of the slab. The controller controls the oxygen pressure value of the oxygen slots by scarfing the slab according to the surface shape data of the scanned slab.
