A membrane-electrode assembly for a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell exhibiting excellent hot water and oxidation resistance, low temperature size stability and excellent power generation performance even in a low temperature environment. The membrane-electrode assembly comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane composed of a sulfonated polyarylene polymer having a recurring unit of the formula (1): (see formula 1) and a recurring unit of the formula (2): (see formula 2) Q is represented by the formula (3): (see formula 3) Y and A each independently represent a divalent atom or organic group, or a direct bond; Ar represents an aromatic group; B independently represents O or S; R1 to R3 each independently represent H, F, nitrile or alkyl; R4 to R11 each independently represent H, F, alkyl or an aromatic group; and n represents an integer of 2 or greater, provided that the aromatic group includes a derivative thereof. |
