<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a character of anti-aliasing font from being determined erroneously as an image region on a monitor. <P>SOLUTION: With respect to a target pixel, that pixel and four pixels therearound (total 9 pixels) are extracted (S3). With regard to the 9 pixels thus extracted, the maximum values of sub-pixels are determined as the representative values of respective pixels (S5). A histogram of the 9 representative values is taken and referred to H0, H1, H2... starting from that with the largest number of distributions (S7). A determination is then made as to whether or not the following formula (1) is satisfied. H0+H1+H2<TH...(1).
