<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve timing control device and a method, capable of efficiently raising the temperature of an exhaust emission control catalyst arranged in an exhaust passage. <P>SOLUTION: This variable valve timing control device variably controls the opening-closing timing of intake-exhaust valves (5 and 6) of an internal combustion engine (1) for arranging the exhaust emission control catalyst (14) in the exhaust passage (3), and is particularly characterized by controlling the exhaust valve (6) and the intake valve (5) so as to increase from an initial value after a predetermined period, by setting an overlap quantity in the initial value, by delaying the ignition timing, and by injecting fuel in a compression stroke so that the air-fuel ratio becomes lean when starting in a cold state. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
