<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rear obstacle detecting apparatus that can prevent any notifiable object, such as another vehicle, from being detected as a non-notifiable object even when the subject vehicle is in a position close to a non-notifiable object, such as a guard rail. <P>SOLUTION: A rear obstacle detecting apparatus for detecting the presence of any object in a rear area of the subject vehicle is provided with a non-notifiable object detection area control unit that controls the magnitude of a non-notifiable object detection area, which is the range of detection angles in which an object is to be detected as a non-notifiable object, and a distance calculating unit that calculates the distance from the subject vehicle to any non-notifiable object.
