<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a receiver capable of suppressing deterioration of an accuracy in an estimation of arrival direction of a desired signal by estimating rough information about a background noise at an initial stage of an electric wave reception process. <P>SOLUTION: The receiver includes antennas, RF converters, analog-digital (A/D) converters, calculation section, first and second characteristic vectors calculation sections, and background noise estimating section. The antennas receive a plurality of electric waves containing the desired signal and the background noise. The RF converters perform a frequency conversion for the received electric wave, and the A/D converters perform a digital conversion for a frequency converted signal. The calculation section calculates a quaternary cumulant matrix on the basis of a plurality of digital signals to calculate an estimate value of a steering matrix of the desired signal. The first and second characteristic vectors calculation sections respectively calculate the first and second characteristic vectors on the basis of the digital signal from the estimation value and the digital signal from the A/D converter.
