PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide zinc oxide which indicates a high-degree whiteness and can suppress foaming when kneaded into a resin etc., a method for producing the zinc oxide, and cosmetics, a resin composition, and a coating composition which contain the zinc oxide.

SOLUTION: The zinc oxide is obtained by pyrolyzing zinc carbonate and/or basic zinc carbonate and has an ignition loss of 1.0 mass% or below and a degree of whiteness W of at least 95.
