<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material feeding device which determines whether or not a detecting member is good prior to feed of sheet materials to prevent damage of a motor for driving an elevating mechanism and to provide an image forming apparatus including the device. <P>SOLUTION: The sheet material feeding device 20 has an elevating motor 55 for driving a lift plate 33 to a feeding position side or a separating position side, a projection piece 41a which can move in the up and down direction in association with rotation of a sheet material stacking plate 28, the detecting member 50 which can output an LO detection signal when the projection piece 41a moves to an upper side predetermined position, a controlling section 100 which stops power distribution for driving the elevating motor 55 to the feeding position side based on the LO detection signal, and a sheet feeding cassette 22 which rotatably supports the sheet material stacking plate 28 and which can be attached to and removed from an apparatus body 1a in a direction perpendicular to a transporting direction.
