<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic gain control device and an automatic gain control method that suppress degradations of reception characteristics unlike existing techniques. <P>SOLUTION: A gain control section 4 has: output level measurement sections 30 for measuring output levels of reception chains 3, respectively; a common gain determination section 31 for determining a common gain common to variable gain amplifiers 12 on the basis of statistics of the output levels; a gain setting section 32 for setting a gain for each variable gain amplifier 12; and adjusted gain determination sections 33 for precisely determining individual adjusted gains for the variable gain amplifiers 12, respectively, within a range narrower than that of the common gain on the basis of the output levels of the reception chains 3 having the variable gain amplifiers 12 with the common gain set by the gain setting sections 32.
