PURPOSE: An encoding method and apparatus of motion information, and a decoding method and apparatus thereof are provided to improve the compression efficiency of an image by using various motion information candidates obtained based on the motion information of a surrounding prediction unit. CONSTITUTION: A motion prediction unit obtains motion information about a current prediction unit(2310). A candidate motion information generator determines the availability of the motion information of temporal prediction units spatially related to the current prediction unit(2320). In case the motion information of the available spatial prediction units and temporal prediction units are smaller than the predetermined number, the candidate motion information generator produces additional candidate motion information(2330). A motion information encoder encodes the motion information of the current prediction unit(2340).
