In the present invention, objects are detected highly accurately in a video image that is subject to profound distortion due to an expanded coverage of viewing field. This object detection device (1) detects objects in a video image captured by a camera that has a wide viewing field and is subject to different degrees of distortion at different positions within the image. The object detection device is provided with: a candidate area selection unit (10) that selects candidate areas from which objects are to be detected in the camera image, and generates candidate area information for specifying the candidate areas and positional parameter information which indicates the distances to the candidate areas from the center of the camera image;and an object detection unit (20) that selects an object detection method to be used to detect objects in the candidate areas on the basis of the positional parameter information corresponding to the candidate areas, rotates the candidate areas with reference to the center of the camera image such that the candidate areas are brought into the same direction with respect to the center of the camera image, and detects whether or not an object is present in each of the candidate areas which have been rotated into the uniform direction.
