The protecting ring has a base region (54) including a support surface (56), where an annular base of a gas cylinder is supported on the support surface. The base region includes a standing surface (58) in a distance to the support surface on a side, which is turned away from the annular base. The standing surface is placed on a ground surface. A centering region includes an outer centering ring (64), which lies at an outer sleeve surface (36) of the annular base and passes into the base region. The centering ring fixes a position of the protecting ring relative to the base. The protecting ring is made of plastic, elastomer or electrically conductive material.
