The method involves receiving an image of the surrounding area (UB) of a vehicle (10) on agricultural field (LF) by an imaging sensor unit (23). A pattern on the recorded image of the surrounding area is detected. The surrounding area of vehicle is classified by comparing detected pattern with patterns stored in a database (D1). An independent claim is included for apparatus for classifying surrounding region of vehicle.
