The method involves determining a degree of distraction of a driver based on results of driver observation using a vehicle-internal camera and/or from control actions of the driver. A perceptible visual alarm indication is output to the driver when the detected degree of distraction of the driver and a predicted level of potential risk of collision between a vehicle and a road user exceed a preset threshold value. The indication is formed such that direction is displayed to the driver, where the risk of collision between the vehicle and the road user is determined in the direction.
