The method involves readjusting exciting current (Ie) of a generator (1) depending on deviation of generator output voltage from a preset target voltage. Generator response time (tlr) is set during driving of a vehicle at speed not equal to zero. The generator response time is set during idle condition of an engine (3) with a rotary speed (n), if the vehicle speed is zero and/or a pedal is operated during driving condition, where generator response time during idle condition of the engine is greater than generator response time during driving condition of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a generator controller.
