The method involves determining a deterioration degree of an exhaust gas after-treatment system in accordance with the mileage of a vehicle. Factors e.g. afterglow activation time, battery charging time and post-injection, influencing the fuel consumption of the vehicle are determined in accordance with the deterioration degree of the exhaust gas after-treatment system, where the afterglow activation time is determined based on basic mileage. The battery charging time is variably controlled by an electricity generation controller.
