Preparing a hydroxyapatite containing substance comprises preparing a suspension preferably containing nanoscale hydroxyapatite particle; adding a polymer to the suspension, where the amount of hydroxyapatite in the suspension is less than 5, preferably less than 0.1%; and separating the polymer. An independent claim is included for the hydroxyapatite containing substance obtained by the above method and comprising a polymer functionalized hydroxyapatite particle with an average particle size of less than 250 nm.
