The system has multiple hardware devices for realizing two discrete magnifications and receiving light from an identical direction, where the two discrete magnifications differ from each another. A controller switches the two discrete magnifications of the system at two points of time, respectively based on a direct input of a user of the system or based on an external signal. A discrete magnification changer i.e. Galilean changer, is provided in the system. Optical axes of an optical unit are provided in parallel or form an angle of less than 5 degree when the axes leave the system. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a camera system.
