[Class 72.] In a continuous furnace for the tempering or other treatment of ferro-magnetic articles or material their movement through the furnace is effected by magnetic attraction without the assistance of gravity. The articles A, which may be ferro-magnetic, or placed in ferro-magnetic containers, form a magnetic chain which is pulled forward by the magnet 5, and thus pushes along the demagnetized articles to the point where they drop out of the furnace. The movement of the articles may be assisted by spring pressure, gas pressure, &c. The furnace may be heated by a resistance the magnetic field of which may be used to assist that of the magnet 5. An additional electromagnet 9 may be supplied with alternating or pulsating current to impart vibration to the articles. The material treated may be in long lengths wound on a drum at each end of the furnace. A differential thermo-couple pyrometer may be employed having one joint at the demagnetization point d and the other at the discharge point b.</p>
