Quaternised nitrogen compounds and their use as additives in fuels and lubricants

Fuel composition comprises a conventional fuel containing a portion of at least one quaternized nitrogen containing compound comprising a reaction product, or a quaternized nitrogen compound of the reaction product obtained by purification, in which the reaction product is obtainable by (a) reacting a hydrocarbyl-substituted polycarboxylic acid compound with a compound comprising at least one polycarboxylic acid with the reactive, and (b) the subsequent reaction with a quaternizing agent, in which at least one tertiary amino group is converted into a quaternary ammonium group. Fuel composition comprises a conventional fuel containing a portion of at least one quaternized nitrogen containing compound comprising one reaction product, or a quaternized nitrogen compound of the reaction product obtained by purification, in which the reaction product is obtainable by (a) reacting a hydrocarbyl-substituted polycarboxylic acid compound with a compound comprising at least one polycarboxylic acid with the reactive, preferably addable or condensable oxygen or nitrogen group and containing at least one quaternizable amino group to obtain a quaternizable hydrocarbyl-substituted polycarboxylic acid compound, and (b) the subsequent reaction with a quaternizing agent, in which at least one tertiary amino group is converted into a quaternary ammonium group, where the quaternizing agent of alkyl esters is a cycloaromatic or cycloaliphatic mono- or polycarboxylic acid, preferably dicarboxylic acid. Independent claims are also included for: (1) the quaternized nitrogen compound as mentioned above; (2) producing the quaternized nitrogen compound comprising reacting the hydrocarbyl-substituted polycarboxylic acid compound quaternizable containing at least one tertiary, quaternizable amino group with the quaternizing agent, which converts at least one tertiary amino group into the quaternary ammonium group, where the quaternizing agent of the alkyl ester is the cyclic aromatic or cycloaliphatic mono-or polycarboxylic acid, preferably dicarboxylic acid; (3) use of the quaternized nitrogen compound as a fuel additive; and (4) an additive concentrate comprising at least one quaternized nitrogen containing compound as mentioned above in combination with other diesel or gasoline fuel additives, preferably diesel fuel additives.
