A machine (1) manufacturing filter cigarettes (11) comprises an inspection device (12) set up and managed by a method that includes the steps of loading a self-learning unit (19) with data relative to predetermined parameters (P1) characteristic of the particular filter cigarette (11) in production; loading the self-learning unit (19) with data consisting in reference images of the filter cigarettes (11); processing the data loaded into the self-learning unit (19) in order to determine parameters (P2) relating to the physical properties of the filter cigarettes (11); storing these same parameters (P2) in a table (29), and using an analysis and comparison unit (21) to process images of the manufactured filter cigarettes (11), received during production by this same unit (21) from an optical unit (13), on the basis of the stored parameters (P2).
