An aerofoil 1.1 incorporates a duct 1.2 for supplying air to a cavity 1.6 via a tube 1.3 extending along the leading edge of the aerofoil. The cavity is revealed by a closeable door 1.4. At the leading edge of the aerofoil air is diverted by the cavity door such that an air flow exits the tube via the cavity and is pushed over the upper surface of the aerofoil. This results in a high lift being generated totally independently of the aerofoil's velocity. A movable control surface 1.5 is located at the trailing edge and is able to control the lift generated by the blown air. The same principle can be applied to hydrofoils in which an incompressible fluid (most preferably water) is blown through a tube from a machine to a cavity situated at the leading edge of the hydrofoil. This results in a high lift being generated totally independently of the hydrofoil's velocity. |
