[Class 83 (iv).] In a double-action cupping press the plate 55 is gripped and cupped over a die 46 by the mechanical descent of a die 14 co-operating with a draw ring 54 yieldingly supported by air pressure in a telescoping cylinder 47 supplied from a tank 59 through a hand-controlled valve 61, piping 57, and conduit 58, the die 46 being prevented from descending by the piston 22 supported by liquid trapped in the cylinder 19. The work is then partly shaped as in Fig. 2, after which the die 18 descends on the work and co-operates with die 46 which is now allowed to descend by the release of the trapped liquid in the cylinder 19 through the spring-pressed valve 26 when the liquid pressure exceeds the spring pressure, and later the valve 26 is fully opened by a timed lever system 46a, the liquid escaping back to the pressure liquid tank 35 through a flap valve 37. The work is then completed as in Fig. 3. The release pressure on valve 26 is set by hand-wheel 28 abutting against the spring. When the dies 18, 14 ascend again the draw ring 54 also rises under the air pressure in the cylinder 47 to strip the work. During this movement the valve 39 is opened by mechanically-operated rod 41 so that pressure liquid can flow from the tank 35 through the valve 39 to the underside of the piston 22 through a one-way valve 31 (the flap valve 37 also being a one-way valve only). The cylinder 47 can telescope over the top of the cylinder 19. An exhaust valve 64 on being opened allows the draw ring 54 to be lowered.
