Metallic coatings are applied to plastic materials made of cellulose esters or ethers, e.g. cellulose acetate, nitrate, formate, butyrate, propionate, or phthalate, or ethyl, methyl, or benzyl cellulose, by spraying the metal on to a roughened surface p of the material. Any metal or alloy can be used, but, in applying a metal of high melting-point, a metal of relatively low melting-point is applied first. Different portions of the material may be treated with different metals or alloys, and the final metal surface may be treated by grinding, polishing, or applying a matte, satin, or other surface. The roughening of the cellulose derivative surface can be effected by sandpapering, sand-blasting, or otherwise, and parts of the surface can be protected by a stencil in order to leave smooth portions from which the metal can be removed by wiping. The design can be sunk below or raised above the surface of the material as desired.
|
