The element has a wave type communication device arranged in a body (600) and a set of antennae (627) distributed at a periphery of the body about the axis of symmetry for operating the antennae in transmission and reception. An operating electronics organizes the data transfer in transmission and in reception. An antenna monitor evaluates a reception quality parameter for a sub-assembly of the antennae to select the antennae set as a flinction of reception quality parameters derived from the sub-assembly and to command an actuator to connect the antennae to the electronics. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a well head device (2) a method for providing communication by a drill string element (3) a method for drilling, exploration and/or operation of a hydrocarbon well.
