PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling the charge and discharge of a battery in an electric power system and a controlling method thereof are provided to improve power efficiency for charging and discharging by reducing the change number of battery charge and discharge modes. CONSTITUTION: Reference discharge depth information and total charged capacity information within battery life are received for each battery(S310). Batteries are included in an electric power system. A plurality of batteries is grouped into a first group and a second group(S320). The total charged capacity information is used for the grouping. The batteries of the first and second groups are controlled to alternatively perform charge and discharge(S330).
