The method involves detecting an imminent collision or a collision of a vehicle (1) by an acceleration unit (4). An energy storage device (2) is accelerated towards the effective direction of the collision resulting from the application of force by the acceleration unit such that the relative movement between the energy storage device and vehicle is enabled. The electrical terminals (2.1) of the energy storage device are fixed to the vehicle and are disconnected from the energy storage device by the acceleration unit.
