This image display device is provided with a light scanning unit which performs scanning in a first direction and a second direction of an image plane with light emitted from a light source by the reciprocating rotational movement of the reflection plane of the light, and an optical system which enlarges the scanning angle of the light with which the scanning is performed, and the optical system comprises a free-form surface lens on the light scanning unit side, and comprises a free-form surface mirror on the image plane side. The length in the first direction may be longer than the length in the second direction, and the free-form surface mirror may be disposed such that the first direction becomes approximately parallel to a first plane defined by an incident light ray and a reflected light ray in the free-form surface mirror when the light scanning unit stands still in the middle of a scanning range.</p>
