The cooking appliance (10) has a fire sensor (30) that is arranged in a cooking chamber (12). A controller (26) activates an integrated fire-extinguishing device (22), when fire is detected by the fire sensor. The fire-extinguishing device has a cartridge (48) having carbon-dioxide, and an activation valve (52). The activation valve triggers, when predetermined temperature is exceeded. The fire-extinguishing device is a water nozzle. The fire sensor is an optical sensor, a temperature sensor or a gas sensor. An independent claim is included for a method for controlling cooking appliance.
