Provided is technology for the simple production, in a short amount of time, of a positive electrode active substance the primary component of which is FeOF having an adequate charge-discharge capacity. Also provided is a positive electrode active substance the primary component of which is FeOF. The method for producing a positive electrode active substance the primary component of which is FeOF comprises a step for mixing iron oxide Fe2O3 and iron fluoride FeF3 while both are in solid form and then melting and rapidly cooling in an inert gas atmosphere. The positive electrode active substance the primary component of which is FeOF is formed from 50% or more of FeOF and iron fluoride FeF3 and/or iron oxide Fe2O3 as the balance.
