<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element which can be easily installed in various optical systems without significant change in optical design, and is inorganic and has durability. <P>SOLUTION: A selectively absorptive wire-grid polarizer 10a for polarizing incident light 12 comprises a thin film lamination layer 18 disposed on an upper side of a substrate 14, composed of a wire-grid array of elongated metal elements 26 having a period less than half of wavelength of the light. One of the thin film lamination layers is a thin film layer with a refractive index greater than a refractive index of the substrate.
