<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable pressurized liquid at an inlet to be released at a liquid pressure that is lower than the conventional pressure when the liquid pressure at the inlet has increased sharply, and to prevent the occurrence of a large surge pressure at the inlet due to the initial increase of the liquid pressure at the inlet from that low-liquid-pressure state. <P>SOLUTION: A relief valve R1 adjusts the relief pressure by means of a plunger 3, which is pressed forward by an elastic member and blocks off an outlet 1a and an inlet 2a, resisting the elastic force of the elastic member and retracting in conjunction with a rise in the pressure at the inlet 2a so as to connect the inlet 2a and the outlet 1a, and by means of a piston 4, which presses the rear end of the elastic member forward, advancing in conjunction with a rise in the pressure at the inlet 1a and thereby compressing the elastic member.
