SURFACE EMITTING LASER ELEMENT, OPTICAL SCANNER AND IMAGE FORMING APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface emitting laser which has polarization stability at high single fundamental mode output, a beam cross-sectional shape with high isotropy and a small beam divergence angle and which can be stably manufactured with a high yield.

SOLUTION: An emission area of each light emitting part of a surface emitting laser array includes: a first semiconductor surface structure area 116B including a center part with a relatively high reflection rate; and a second semiconductor surface structure area 116A with a relatively low reflection rate when viewed from a z-axis direction. The shape of a current constriction area 108b in each light emitting part has a shape of which the length parallel to a y-axis direction and passing through the center is shorter than the length parallel to an x-axis direction and passing through the center when viewed from the z-axis direction. The shape of the first semiconductor surface structure area 116B in each light emitting part has the shape of which the length parallel to the y-axis direction and passing through the center is longer than the length parallel to the x-axis direction and passing through the center when viewed from the z-axis direction.
