In vivo methods for production of styrene via a recombinant host cell can include cell expression of at least one polynucleotide encoding a polypeptide having cinnamic acid decarboxylase activity, and at least one polynucleotide encoding a polypeptide having phenylalanine ammonia lyase activity. In some embodiments, the subject technology provides a method for production of styrene comprising: (i) contacting a recombinant host cell with a fermentable carbon substrate, said recombinant host comprising: a) at least one polynucleotide encoding a polypeptide having phenylalanine ammonia lyase activity; and b) at least one polynucleotide encoding a polypeptide having cinnamic acid decarboxylase activity; (ii) growing said recombinant cell for a time sufficient to produce styrene; and (iii) optionally recovering said styrene. |
