摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct smelting process and an apparatus therefor for producing a molten metal from an iron-containing material that can achieve a high efficiency for heat transfer. <P>SOLUTION: A feed material which includes a solid material and a carrier gas is injected into molten baths 22 and 23 at a velocity of at least 40 m/s through a solid injection lance 27 arranged so that the central axis is at an angle of 20 to 90 degrees downward with respect to the horizontal axis. The feed material injection generates a surface 25 gas flow of at least 0.04 Nm<SP POS="POST">3</SP>/s/m<SP POS="POST">2</SP>in the molten baths 22 and 23 at least in part by reactions of the material injected in the baths 22 and 23. The gas flow causes the molten material to be projected upwardly as splashes, droplets and streams, and forms an expanded molten bath zone 28, with the gas flow and the upwardly projected molten material causing substantial movement of the material in the molten bath 23 and strong mixing of the molten bath 23. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
