<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact imaging lens capable of performing focusing at high speed, and an imaging apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The imaging lens comprises substantially three lens groups including, in order from an object side, a first lens group, a second lens group with a positive refractive power, and a third lens group with a negative refractive power. The first lens group comprises a front group having a negative lens in the position closest to the object side, an aperture stop, and a rear group with a positive refractive power. The second lens group comprises, in order from the object side, a first lens with a negative refractive power, a second lens with a positive refractive power, and a third lens with a positive refractive power.
